CULT is a term, sometimes considered pejorative, for a relatively small group which is typically led by a charismatic and self-appointed leader, who excessively controls its members, requiring unwavering devotion to a set of beliefs and practices which are considered deviant. Cults present a pleasing and benign "front" in order to attract followers. Examples of types of cults: Destructive, Doomsday, Political, Religious, Polygamist, Self-help, Multi-level Marketing,.

Cults have a top down pyramid structure where the leader sits at the top with all the power and resources and controls all levels below them. The followers are merely resources for the leader to be exploited for labor, money, power and recruiting.

In order to control the behavior and compliance of followers the cult leaders employ coercive control - using force or threats, or by causing fear. Coercive control negates any argument that the follower has willfully consent.
